He was a graduate of Marion High School, Class of 1940, and pursued further education at Indiana Wesleyan University, Earlham College, Christian Theological Seminary, and Garrett Evangelical Seminary.

Howard was widowed three times throughout his life and often reflected fondly on the blessings and memories shared with his wives, Ruthanne, Phyllis and Jean.
Survivors include his sons, Steve Cress of Huntington and Randy Cress of Nevada.
Howard will be remembered for his warm spirit, sense of humor, and zest for life. He enjoyed river canoeing, reading, gardening, computers, and photography, and had a well-known fondness for Cadillacs, owning seven over the years, each one a reflection of his appreciation for life's finer details and smooth rides. Known for his adventurous side, he even received a speeding ticket at age 93. In recent years, you could often see him behind the wheel of his golf cart, stopping to enjoy coffee with friends at the convenience store in town, sharing stories, laughter, and fellowship.
