Obituary

James Thomas Alfrey "Tom", 78, passed away at 9:52 pm Sunday, June 2, 2024 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born in Hartford City on November 10, 1945 the son of James "Dale" and Freida May (Herrin) Alfrey. His parents preceded him in death.

Tom graduated from Montpelier High School in 1963. On August 14, 1965 he married the love of his life, Sharon E. (Hurley). Tom was a member of St. John The Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Hartford City. He was faithful of his faith and he was always willing to help out anyone at church, sometimes only having a moment's notice. His dedication to his church never went unnoticed by his family or the congregation, each of them knowing that Tom loved to help others. He formerly was on the financial board at church. He loved airplanes and flying and proudly earned his pilot's license in the 90's. If something was flying overhead, it never failed, Tom was looking in the sky.  His family knew him only as a kind, mild-mannered and hardworking man that had a smile that lit up the room. He had a heart of gold and he loved his family with everything in him. Spending time at the 4-H fair watching his grandchildren show animals was the hi-light of his days.

He loved to farm and when he no longer was able to do it all himself, he enlisted the help of his family and would watch and give advice on how it needed to be done. He was passionate about Green Bay Packers and stayed loyal in the winning and losing seasons and back in the day he never missed a game on tv. He was also a John Deere fan and Notre Dame fan. Tom worked at Delaware Machine where he proudly worked alongside his son, Andy and grandson, James before his retirement on February 4, 2009. After retirement he was a faithful walker around the four-mile radius where he lived or at the Montpelier Civic Center. The neighbors could always catch him sitting on the front porch or in the garage giving them a smile and a wave as they drove by.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Sharon E. Alfrey of Hartford City; son, James Andrew "Andy" (wife, Angie) Alfrey of Hartford City; daughter, Jodi Lynn (husband, Ryan) Beck of Montpelier; grandchildren, James (wife, Emily) Alfrey, Brady Beck, Katey Apple (significant other, Dezi Lyons), Riley (wife, Beth) Apple and Brandon Apple; great-grandchildren, Jackson Alfrey, Paisley Apple and Lainey Apple. He is also preceded in death by his sister. Diana M. Alfrey.
