Obituary

Jimmy D. Rumple passed away May 1, 2023, at Perrysburg Manor in Perrysburg, OH. Loretta I. Rumple passed away October 10, 2017 at the Heritage Village in Waterville, OH. While death came to them separately, long united in marriage on Earth, they are once again united and will be laid to rest together at the Van Buren Cemetery in Van Buren, Indiana.

Jimmy D. Rumple was born on July 5, 1934, in the Van Buren, Indiana home of his parents, Ernest A. Rumple and Dorothy (Benson) Rumple. He was the second of three children, and the only son.

Loretta I. (Miner) Rumple was born in the Marion, Indiana home of her parents, Edward H. Miner and Effie E. (James) Miner. She was the last of three children and the second daughter in her family.

Jim and Loretta met when they were high school students; he told her right away that she should marry him, but she thought he was "crazy". Jim joined the army July 1, 1954 and was assigned to Company E of the 12th Ordinance Battalion. He expected to be sent to Korea but was surprised when he was deployed to Europe instead, where he had many memorable moments as an M.P. in post-World War II Germany. But the petite attractive young woman he had met in Van Buren, Indiana remained in his heart and mind and his correspondence to her following her sudden, tragic loss of her beloved older brother, won her heart. In 1956 Jim returned home on leave to marry her. Never ones to be bound by tradition, they drove to Steuben County, Indiana and eloped, getting married at the courthouse on August 13, 1956. Jim returned to Europe alone to complete his tour of duty and Loretta remained in Fort Wayne, Indiana where she had a secretarial job.

Over the years they moved to different locations in the country, held different jobs (Jim in production and quality control and Loretta in bookkeeping and accounting), raised a son and eventually doted on a granddaughter. Wherever they lived Loretta ensured their home and the grounds around it were beautifully kept, inside and out. Loretta served as a perfect counterbalance to Jim, enjoying adventures with him while also setting some boundaries beyond which she would not stray (no, the monkey won in a card game cannot stay). They loved God and their country, enjoyed friends and family and served their community through club memberships including the V.F.W. and American Legion. In retirement, Jim took on a mission to assist older veterans who had no one else to ensure they had meals, rides to appointments, assistance filling out applications for all the benefits they had earned through service, someone to be by their bedside as they passed from this world to the next, and an honor guard when they were interred following death and a flag to mark their graves on Memorial Day. Jim was awarded service office of the year for Indiana for his many years of service to his fellow veterans.

Jim and Loretta celebrated 61 years of marriage before Loretta's death. While Jim learned to adjust, life without her was never quite the same. Jim continued to make friends everywhere he went and enjoyed his little home by the river he called "Paradise" even while battling physical ailments that left him wheelchair bound the last few years of his life.

A graveside service will be held at Van Buren Cemetery to lay to rest together Jim and Loretta on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.
