Obituary

Martha “Sue” Jones, 97, of Montpelier, Indiana passed away peacefully at River Terrace in Bluffton, Indiana on October 30, 2026. Born on December 30, 1928, in the hills of West Virginia, she was raised in a Christian family who enjoyed gospel music often. She moved with her family to Wayne, Michigan, when she was 13, where she attended school and graduated from Wayne High School.

Following her sister Yvonne to the state of Washington, Sue worked as a Bell telephone operator in the city of Aberdeen. It was there that she met and married the love of her life, Richard "Dick" Jones, who had been traveling the West Coast after leaving the military.

Sue and Dick eventually settled in Jay County, Indiana, just north of Fiat, where they raised their three children. Rejoining the workforce, Sue worked as a receptionist at the Caylor-Nickel Clinic in Bluffton until her retirement as head of her department.

An avid reader and gardener, Sue also enjoyed golf, square dancing, travel, and trips to the casino with her husband. She excelled at cooking for her family, with black raspberry pie being one of her absolute specialties.

A devout Christian, Sue attended the First Baptist Church of Montpelier for over 60 years, teaching Sunday school, singing hymns, and listening to gospel music. Her family deeply appreciated the "choir of angels" who sang in the hallway outside her room prior to her passing singing her into glory.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. "Dick" Jones; her parents, Jay and Mary (Napier) Finley; and her siblings, Byrd Finley, Charlie Finley, Ruby Tabor, Jay Junior Finley, Abby Finley, Yvonne Mead, Frank Finley, and Leonard “Jake” Finley.

She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her children, Jay R. & Carolyn (Sills) Jones, Jesse D. & Mary (Rotella) Jones, and Debra S. (Jones) Johnson; her sister, Joan Bayan; her grandchildren, Jennifer Pike, Julie Cordry, Magdalene Ober, Brian Jones, and Elissa Jones; her great-grandchildren, Croix Cordry, Malayne Milling, Grayson Jones, and Marshall Ober; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may gather to share and remember at Walker & Glancy Funeral Home 109 W Windsor St Montpelier on Friday, November 6, 2026 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

A service to celebrate her life will follow at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow in the Brookside Memorial Park in Montpelier.
