Richard E.
Frederick
Nov 27, 1936 — Sep 11, 2024
Richard E. Frederick "Dick", 87, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at Heritage Pointe in Warren, Indiana. Dick was born on Friday, November 27, 1936 to Raymond and Mina Frederick in Huntington, Indiana. He was quite an athlete at Huntington High School, participating in basketball, football and his favorite sport - track, specifically the mile run. He held the school record for several years and was very proud of his 4:34.4 time.
After he graduated high school in 1955, he entered Huntington College to study English. During Christian Life Emphasis Week, he gave his life to Jesus and never looked back, changing his major to Bible and Religion with the goal of being a pastor. In the fall of 1957, a cute young lady named Delores Gaskill from Idaho caught his eye. Being a preacher's kid, he knew she'd make a great pastor's wife. He graduated in May of 1959 and they were married on June 20 that same year. He later received his Masters of Divinity degree from Huntington College. He was ordained as a minister in the United Brethren Church and as an elder in the United Methodist Church.
Their first church assignment was the Dillman and Mt. Zion United Brethren Church circuit in Wells County. After that, he pastored the following churches: Grayston Avenue UB Church in Huntington, Lancaster UB Church in Lancaster, Ohio. In 1985, he joined the United Methodist Church and pastored Clymers/Webb Chapel in Cass County and then served for 18 years at Woodruff Grove in LaGrange county before he semi-retired. They moved back to Warren in 2006, and he pastored part-time at Epworth UM Church in Bluffton for 10 years until his retirement in May of 2016. Through his 57 years of ministry, he would say that God placed him in the right place at the right time. He developed lifelong friendships with special people who have remained in contact for years. Until their health failed, they attended the Church at McNatt in Wells County and were able to reconnect with many friends from their early years of ministry.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Delores "Dee" Frederick. Two daughters: Patsy (Gary) Hoobler of Marion, Iowa and Sheryl (Steve) Cline of Huntington, Six grandchildren; Jennifer (Kevin) Dale of Avon, Indiana; David (Ashley) Hoobler of Ames, Iowa; Justin (Rubi) Glancy of Beaumont, CA; Preston (Abbey) Hoobler of Flintstone, GA; Richard (Lindsey) Hoobler of Austin, TX and Audrey Hoobler of Marion, IA; seven great grandchildren- Emma, Jackson, Lily, Jesse, Cali, Ethan, Jay and Indi (expected to arrive in December); sister Karen Sue (Susie) Laugle of Huntington, Brother in law, Terry Heck of Hilyard, OH, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
